The first gun went off at 9:00 to start the first race of the 2018 Chicago Public League Cross Country Championships at Washington Park. The Dolphins were looking to win their fourth consecutive city championship, after dominating in previous years. Sam Rivera ‘19 won the 3 mile varsity race, finishing at a time of 15:05.9. Charlie Nevins ‘19 finished in second, running a time of 15:31.5. The Dolphins also had strong performances by Keaton Schwartz ‘19 finishing in 8th place, and Spencer Nelson ‘19 and Luke Lasley ‘19, finishing in 13th and 17th places respectively. Unfortunately, Whitney Young was ousted by Jones by a margin of just three points.

Whitney Young enjoyed strong performances in each of the other races of the day. The Dolphins placed third in the Frosh/Soph race, third in the open race, and fourth in the freshman race. Many runners ran a personal record time, showing vast improvement from the start of the season. “I feel as a team we had a good day, across all levels.” said Malachi Robinson ‘19.

The boys remain very optimistic about the rest of the season. “We’re gonna come back and get ‘em at regionals.” said Tristan Taylor ‘19. After the regional meet will come the sectional and state meets. “City was just the start of our varsity season. Come support us at regionals, sectionals, then at state.” said Justin Villasenor ‘20.

The regional meet will be this Saturday, October 20, at Washington Park at 11:00. Make sure to come out and support!
