Whitney Young Homecoming

The Best Homecoming?

Joselyn Chavez, Editor

Each year Whitney M. Young Magnet High School’s student council works long and hard to have the best theme for the homecoming dance, trying to top last years theme and experience for the entire student body. This year’s dance was phenomenal, especially due to the fact that we were all celebrating Friday’s win against DuSable Leadership Academy where the score was 36-0! Whitney Young is truly the best school in Chicago, perhaps the entire world! According to Leah Malan ‘19, “The dance was really fun! I had a great last homecoming. I danced and jumped in the mosh pit all night long!” Most of the Whitney Young upperclassman would agree with her as this school has been a part of our life for a few years. Malan specifically brought to my attention that this is her sixth year at Whitney Young due to coming in as an academic center student.

For some students, either incoming seventh graders or freshmen, this is their first look at a Young homecoming or actually their very first homecoming. Luis Cendejas ‘22, brought a fresh perspective as he explains, “I knew the homecoming dance would be about having fun and partying with your friends after a good game and it did meet those expectations.”

Wanting to find one thing we could improve, as Whitney Young is always up for improving to continue being the best school in Chicago, I asked Cendejas for one negative comment. He responded, “I felt the music could’ve been a little more diverse. Different genres should’ve been played for those that don’t really like getting tossed around in mosh pits.” As one of the most diverse schools in existence, this comment will be taken into careful consideration as want everyone to enjoy themselves. The students who attend Whitney Young have many different cultural backgrounds that all meet in one common school.

At times we are able to bring a bit of our community to the school, such as bringing a guest for the homecoming dance. Arturo Vega ‘18, from George Washington High School, had his first experience at a Whitney Young homecoming. He described, “Whitney Young is huge! There were so many people, and it was a very nice atmosphere. I was dancing with other students that I didn’t even know, we were all just having a good time with our friends. Definitely want to come back next year!” We hope you do get a chance to come back and join us, at the best homecoming dance, next year!
