Citizens in Chicago are still mourning the tragic death of 17 year old, Laquan McDonald, who was shot 16 times and killed by police officer, Jason Van Dyke. Van Dyke is currently awaiting a verdict and could possibly face life in prison. If he is not found guilty, many individuals fear that there will be violent riots across the city, similar to when the Rodney King verdict came out.

Conrad Echols ‘19, states that “It just shows that black lives still do not matter in America if he is not found guilty and many people are going to tear the city up.”

Not only will this heavily anticipated verdict will have an affect on McDonald’s and Van Dyke’s family, but it will affect the safety of all citizens as well. Schools, businesses, and communities across the city are preparing for riots that may damage their property and cause harm to the people within them.

According to CBS news, they have mentioned that Van Dyke is more than likely going to be considered guilty on all charges.

A student at Whitney Young whom does not want to be identified, says that, “It would be complete nonsense if he isn’t found guilty”, which is how majority of the Chicago community feels.

With this said, there are multiple opinions, feelings, and thoughts on this sensitive topic, causing Chicago citizens to be on edge. Some of the possible outcomes could be riots throughout Chicago, which will have a negative impact on the community. Many hope that justice will be served as the jury comes to a verdict later this week.
