Whitney Young’s Homecoming Week Kicks Off!

The week of September 24th marks the annual kickoff of homecoming week at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Spirit week starts on Monday, September 24th with Pajama Day, which is followed by Twin Day (Tuesday), Cartoon Day (Wednesday), Class Color Day (Thursday), and Friday (Friday). The class colors are: yellow for seventh graders, purple for eighth graders, green for ninth graders, white for tenth graders, red for eleventh graders, and black for twelfth graders. Elizabeth Mota ‘19 is particularly excited for spirit week. She says, “I have a lot of school spirit, especially since it’s my last year here.” There will be long division schedule on Thursday. There will be a special schedule for our homecoming pep rally on Friday, September 28, 2018. The pep rally will being after second period from 9:25 a.m. to 10:25 a.m. Homecoming shirts are being sold for $20 during lunch periods in Blue House.

 

This year’s homecoming also marks the return of the currently undefeated Whitney Young football team, led by coach Christopher Mallette. On September 28th, school ends at 2:30 p.m. and the football game begins at 4:15 p.m. at Rockne Stadium against DuSable. Game tickets are $5. Game tickets with the additional ride to and from the game are $10. The bus is scheduled to leave Whitney Young at 2:35 p.m. and is scheduled to return at 7:00 p.m. Whitney Young student and one of the football team managers, Carla Gonzalez ‘19 says, “I’m ready to help the team with our comeback season, and hopefully our winning streak will continue.” You can buy these tickets at the school store, but hurry before they run out!

 

The Homecoming Dance will be on Saturday, September 29th from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The theme for this year’s homecoming dance is A Lantern Festival. The DJ will be Jeff the Illest. The Student Council will decorate the dance with string lights and lanterns. Student council member, Joshua Bobbitt ‘20, says, “I am so excited this year to help plan and decorate the homecoming dance and the pep rally and get some school spirit going.”  Students are to dress in semi-formal attire. Tickets cost $10 at the school store, and coat checks are $2 at the dance.
