Kpop has been gaining popularity within the halls of Whitney Young. Kpop, also known as Korean Pop, is a music genre from Seoul, South Korea that incorporates both Korean and American language and culture. The flashy music videos and catchy beats have gained an international fanbase, the most notable Kpop artists being BTS, who are about to start their first sold-out tour in America. Whitney Young hosts a number of Kpop fans, some of whom that see Kpop as something more than just a music genre.

When asked what the Kpop community at Whitney means to them, Nazareth Castro ‘21 responded that “knowing others who appreciate and love Kpop just as much as me makes me excited to come to school every day.” Sarah Sanchez ‘21 agrees: “it is becoming more common to see students walk around with Kpop sweaters and pins on their backpacks, which was once considered to be taboo at my elementary school. To many, the music genre also sparks new connections with others: Nhi Duong ‘19 says “Thanks to Kpop I have met some of my closest friends today.” Clearly, the community within our school is not only a strong one, but a place where many feel safe and loved”.

Many clubs, including Asian American Club, incorporate Kpop dance and culture throughout the year. Whether you join these clubs or not, you are sure to find a Kpop mutual during your time at Whitney!
