As we wind down the 2017-2018 track and field season, conference meets are taking place.  CPS had their championship meet this past Saturday on May 5th. The qualifiers took place the previous Wednesday, but events ended prematurely due to lightning.  As a result, on Saturday, more heats were run instead of there just being a championship heat. The meet started with the 4X800 meter relay. Whitney Young held the lead for a while and then competed with Lane in the last leg.  Whitney Young took second with a time of 8:16. In the two-mile, Whitney Young took first and second with Clayton Mendez ‘18 and Charlie Nevins ‘19 respectively. In the 110 meter high hurdles, Jimi Taiwo ‘20 got 5th with a time of 15.99 seconds.  Everyone who beat Jimi was a senior, so be on the lookout for him next year.

In the 800, Sam Rivera ‘19 unleashed a huge kick to take first with a time of 1:56.58.  Teammate Charlie Nevins ‘19 got ninth with a time of 2:05.68. Sam Rivera commented on his 800 race, “There was a guy from Jones who led for majority of the race, but I caught him on the homestretch in my final kick.” The 4X200 meter relay ran a personal record (PR) of 1:32.76 and got seventh.  In the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, Alex Vick ‘20 and Martin Rusanov ‘20 placed 13th and 14th respectively. In the mile, Whitney Young swept, just like in the two-mile, (getting first and second place). Clayton Mendez took first place with a time of 4:20 and was followed by Sam Rivera who finished in 4:31.  In the 4X400, Whitney Young again took first with a time of 3:31 and just beat out Lane for the win. Spectator Ellie Odom ‘19 was watching the race and was very excited at the end. “Whoa, we beat Lane! That was a great race to watch.”

In the field events, Jimi got third with a jump of 6’ 1’’.  In the long jump, Alex Vick jumped 17’ 8’’. In the triple jump, Bryce Lusterio ‘19 placed 10th with 38’ 10’’.

The meet ended with Lane in first with 95.5 points, and Morgan Park got second with 88 seconds.  Whitney Young took third with 76 points.
