When Boredom Strikes

Brooke Gist

Do you ever sit at home in your room or on the couch and get tired of doing homework? Well, me, too. Freshman Jacqui Burrier ‘21says, “I think it’s more worthwhile to fuel my boredom rather than to just sit in space and do nothing.” If you need a quick distraction or an hour away from the books, here’s a list of 6 hings to do to keep you occupied.

Do a puzzle. Sounds so first grade, right? Wrong. Doing a puzzle is not only a great way to stimulate your brain but after you finish it, there there is a sense of accomplishment with the final result. You can buy cheap and affordable puzzles on Amazon.
Paint all your cheap jewelry with clear nail polish. Aren’t you tired of those green stains rings leave on your fingers but refuse to give them up because they are too cute? Just get a bottle of clear polish, put some of paper down so you won’t ruin the surface you’re working on and apply a thin layer of the polish on the jewelry.
Send snail mail! Now I know some of you might have absolutely no idea what snail mail is because we have texting and snapchat but especially if you have a friend in college or a family member who doesn’t live in your city, write a letter to them and I assure you it will make their day. Justin Stovall ‘17 says, “I love getting mail in college… even if it’s a postcard, it’s more personable than an text and it puts a smile on my face knowing someone was thinking about me.”
Work out. Even if you don’t have access to a gym, working out is very rewarding and it can be fun, too. Click here to get a list of full at home workouts that pay off. No more excuses about feeling lazy and blaming it on not being able to get to the gym… do some crunches at home and keep that body happy and healthy.
Clean. Yeah, yeah ,chores are boring but when you have your favorite song turned up to full volume and your dancing socks on, cleaning can be fun. You also won’t feel bad about taking a break because you’re doing something productive! After cleaning and when you are ready to get back to work, you will be in a more cleanly environment and you will be more efficient. An organized room leads to an organized head.
Meditate. I know you may be thinking meditation? Yuck! Won’t that make me even more bored? The answer is “no.” If you are overwhelmed with anything going on in your life or just don’t feel like typing that research paper due in two hours, try mediating. Meditation is a great way to clear your mind and a great way to let go of any negativity you are hanging on to. Smiling Mind is a great app that you can download for free on your phone.

If these 6 ideas don’t break your boredom, ask a friend what they do.
