On Saturday, May 5, 2018, the Whitney Young Girl’s Track & Field team competed in the Chicago Public League City Championship at Hanson Stadium. Out of 24 teams, Whitney Young placed first place with 151 points, beating Lane Technical College Prep High School who scored 101 points and Kenwood Academy High School who scored 90.5 points.

Senior captain and defending state champion in the 100m and 200m dash, Amira Young ‘18, was asked how she felt before and after the win. She stated, “Before the meet, I was pretty confident that my team would win enough events to take first place in the 2018 City Championship. After our victory, I felt that due to our success from today, I’m 100% sure that we will be able to qualify in a handful of events downstate later this season.” Young also managed to defend her first place titles in the 100m and 200m dash.

The team had some important victories that they were pretty confident in. The 4X400 relay placed first place and the 4X100 relay placed second place. Although the 4X100 fell short to Kenwood Academy by 0.07 seconds, they still managed to break the school record with a time of 47.51 seconds. Senior sprinter and hurdler, Tatiana Montanez ‘18, said “I’m so proud of the team this year and I am very excited about the events to get downstate because I’m sure we will win them.”

The next event for the girl’s will be the State Sectionals at Concordia University on Thursday, May 10, 2018. Make sure to wish them luck on their road to downstate!
