On the 50th anniversary of its independence, The country of Swaziland has renamed itself to the “Kingdom of eSwatini.” The country decided to change its name because of the constant occurrence of being confused for Switzerland. The name “Kingdom of eSwatini” was the name of the country before it was conquered by the British. “Kingdom of eSwatini,” meaning “land of the Swazis,” met the name change with mixed emotions. Many felt that a name change was unnecessary because of the country’s poverty issues. Kevin Mai ‘18 says, “I think the name of the country is important because it represents something, but there are certainly more pressing issues.” The name of a country is certainly important, but the people within the country should always be the main priority for the government. The royals of Swaziland also came under fire for their luxurious spending. For instance, The king, King Mswati III, was spotted wearing a watch valued at an estimated $1.6 million dollars at his 50th birthday party. The  David Tapia ‘18 says, “Maybe the name change is representative of changing times for the country. Hopefully this is just the first step to future success.” Let’s hope for the best for the country of Swazi.
