Review of the Oscars’ Red Carpet Dresses

Kellianne Bazzell

The Oscars just happened to be last night (March 4th, 2018) so now it’s time to review the best and worst dresses. All of the dresses I’m about to mention can be viewed at once through this link. Since there are so many dresses to look at, I’ve narrowed it down to the top 3 of both categories for you. I’ll save the best for last for you by starting with the-

Top 3 Worst Dresses:

1: If you know St. Vincent, then you probably know just as well as I do that she is not one to shy away from weird. If you don’t know or aren’t convinced then I encourage you to take a look at what she wore last night. I’m not sure if it’s what you can call a dress but it is so bad that I gave her a spot on the list anyway. The outfit hads a very avant garde and high fashion sense to it, which is not a bad idea, especially for the Oscars. However, her outfit failed to impress me with its odd structural, pointed design at the bottom near her crotch. It simply lacked taste, iIMHOn my opinion.

2: Moving on, the second worst dressed would be Salma Hayek. The former model sported one of her signature looks, a purple dress, last evening. Usually her dresses have a lovely structural and overall design to them, however, she failed to impress when she appeared in what I can only describe as a cheap dress-up outfit my mother would get me from the dollar store when I was little. Honestly, the dress with the sequins alone would have probably been fine, but since she added the big, gaudy, low-end looking jewels to it, the whole look was ruined.

3: Whoopi Goldberg also made an appearance last night and I really hate to do this to her, however, that dress needs to be addressed. It looks like the design was inspired by the background aesthetic you might get a Winnie the Pooh book. To make matters even worse, she added a chunky belt to go with it. As far as I’m concerned, big belts can be left in the past where they belong.

Top 3 Best Dressed:

1: I would say the best dress goes to none other than the Olympic figure skater Mirai Nagasu. Her dress had absolutely beautiful blue embroidery and followed a simple yet tasteful design with it being A-line and long sleeved.

2: Zoey Deutch is the second best dressed for her dress that was also beautifully embroidered like Mirai Nagasu. The young actress’ impressive outfit had multiple layers that fell perfectly in a way that complimented her legs and hips without covering up too much of the embroidery anywhere.

3: The final best dress was hard to choose but I went with Greta Gerwig who seemed to follow the night’s overall trend of strong and bright colors. Her dress was a lovely dandelion yellow with little embroidered flowers all over it, a nice look as we are warming up towards spring.

What were your thoughts on this list? Justin M. ‘22 says, “I don’t really know a lot about dresses or anything but St. Vincent’s was definitely weird.” Jamie R. ‘20 says, “I thought this was a pretty good list. But to be honest, I prefered Gal Gadot’s and Jennifer Lawrence’s dresses to some of your best dresses but they’re all pretty good.”
