More stories from Enrique Fuentes

On March 16, 2018 Netflix released a show known as On My Block. On My Block is a Netflix original about a group of black and Latino teenagers starting high school in Los Angeles.  The quartet of teens face many problems that are common in certain parts of the Latino community. On My Block is different from the typical story of teenage angst and circulates around problems with friends, family, and immigration.

The show so far is one season, with ten episodes. The cast includes Monse, played by Sierra Capri, the black girl amongst a group a boys. Ruby, played by Jason Genao, the perfectionist. Brett Gray as Jamal, the awkward, clumsy teen. Then there is the group leader Cesar, played by Diego Tinocco. They meet other interesting characters throughout the season that challenge and assist them such as Olivia, Spooky, and Jasmine.

On April 13, 2018 it was renewed for a second season and that has left fans speculating the events that might happen. Beware of potential spoilers surrounding the end  of the first season.

****Spoilers Ahead***

The season finale left watcher’s in tears, wondering the fate of the Ruby and Olivia. Grace Wilkerson ‘20 hopes, “that they survive. They were so cute and did not deserve to be hurt.” That’s a common wish for many fans, but there are some that wish the opposite upon a certain character.

“I kind of want Olivia to die,” said Bianca Savant ‘18, “not because I don’t like her, but because she’s not a convincingly Latino actor, her spanish is atrocious,” commenting on the controversy surrounding Ronni Hawk, the actor who plays Olivia.

Whatever happens is up to Netflix and what they decide to do with the characters and the story. Viewers will be waiting expectantly for the upcoming season.
