The Weekend’s new album “My Dear Melancholy,” was recently released and fans are going crazy. Long expected and overdue, the album was met with overwhelming support placing all six of the songs on the album in Billboard’s Hot 100 for at least a week.

Although a short album, each song is full of emotion and is thought to be inspired by Abels most recent relationship with Selena Gomez. It was clear to Whitney Young fans as well, Aja Jones ‘18 said “she broke his heart but it brought us hits so I’m not that mad.”

Within the album there are lines that hint his feelings towards Selena. With lyrics in Call out My Name, Abel reveals that he was ready to give a part of his liver to Gomez when she was in need of a donor after fighting a battle with lupus. Kyra McGee ‘18 said “when I heard that song I knew the old Abel was back, the dark Abel.”

Many fans believe that the release of this album calls for the return of The Weekends earlier music. A time in which he revealed to his fans just how deep his sadness was before becoming more of a pop artist. Another sign is the comma at the end of the album title. Fans have taken this as Abel foreshadowing another “Trilogy” year.

In the past, the Weekend released a compilation album made of three smaller projects. Tyree Beard ’18 said “trilogy was some of his best work, six songs isn’t enough, we need more I hope this is another trilogy year.” With fans hopeful of more music releases by the talented artist, all we can do is wait and replay the numerous hits the Weekend has given us.
