Knowing For Yourself

Abnegation. A word known to many but understood by few. A lot of the world was introduced to the word Abnegation in the novel or movie Divergent written by Veronica Roth and produced by Douglas Wick, Lucy Fisher, and Pouya Shabazian. WY student Khloe Wright ‘21 stated “ the Abnegation were my favorite faction in the film honestly, Divergent’s plot was based on around a world where civilians fit into different groups in order to maintain order and keep the society thriving. The main character, Beatrice Prior. played by Shailene Woodley, was a part of the Abnegation faction. This group focused on being helpful and being selfless. The members of the group went as far as not allowing themselves to look in the mirror for too long to avoid vanity. Denean Mayes ‘20 said, “Based off of the movie I would assume that Abnegation means to be selfless and giving.” Like Denean, many people make this assumption about the word without looking it up for themselves. With a little help our dear friend Webster, we can see that Abnegation is defined as the act of renouncing or rejecting something; self-denial. The word itself is a noun and has synonyms such as reject, renounce, surrender, and relinquish. “The real definition is somewhat close to what I thought it was but not really.” stated Kierra Stewart ‘20. It is important for us to look up words to understand them completely rather than relying on outside sources to define them for us.    http://wnpr.org/post/should-noise-connecticut-movie-theaters-be-regulated
