“A Quiet Place” Review

Suspenseful films have been some of the most successful films in the movie industry. One of the most notable suspense/horror films in 2018 is in theaters now. This movie, directed by the lead, John Krasinsky, is known as A Quiet Place. The cast includes John Krasinsky, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe. In this movie, catastrophe has struck. Everyone is either dead or has abandoned their homes. The only survivors shown on screen are the four characters who are a family that is trying to survive because there are creatures or aliens that have invaded Earth. But there’s a lot more to this situation: the family cannot make a noise. These invaders are blind and can hear the smallest of sounds and if they hear you, they’ll kill you. After losing one son to a creature already, the family makes it their life mission to always stay together and stay quiet. The only way this family communicates is through American Sign Language and they travel the land by stepping on mounds of sand to prevent themselves from making noise. The movie takes a quick turn. The daughter (who is deaf), with her overwhelming guilt over her younger brother’s death, travels alone to his small memorial where he died alone, leaving her pregnant mother alone in the house. The father and son are off exploring the land and the mother makes a noise in the house. She ends up being alone with the creatures hunting her down and, eventually, the whole family. The movie itself is absolutely horrifying. It is not horrifying because it is scary with these creatures or through pop-up scenes. The concept that this family needs to remain silent to survive keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. One sound and they’re dead and that simplicity makes the movie absolutely scary and absolutely stellar.

Ellie Lynch ‘18 had this to say: “I really want to see it but it looks so scary so I’m not sure!”

Alex Stensland ‘18 said this on the topic: “Really one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Totally worth the watch.”

John Krasinsky does something no one else has really done for a long time. He has created an almost completely silent movie with 98% of the communication being through American Sign language. The movie is currently ranked 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and it is definitely a must-see but stay silent… because silence is survival.
