According to Deirdre Durkan, the author of the Hollywood Reporter article “’Jaws’ to ‘Get Out’: The Only 6 Horror Films Ever Nominated for Oscar’s Best Picture,” the horror movie Get Out is the sixth horror movie ever nominated for Oscar’s Best Picture award. Furthermore, to emphasize how little recognition horror movies get at the Oscar’s award ceremonies, only a single horror movie has ever won this title: The Silence of the Lambs.

Mr. Durkan writes “In 1992, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ became the first — and only — horror movie to win… Silence of the Lambs has remained the most victorious in its genre, with wins in the top four categories of best actor, actress, director and screenplay.”

For those of you out there that do not know what The Silence of the Lambs is about, here’s a brief summary of the movie’s plot:

“Directed by Jonathan Demme, the horror-thriller film follows a young FBI cadet who must receive the help of an incarcerated cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer who skins his victims. It is the first (and so far only) best picture winner of its genre. It also won for best actor, actress (Jodie Foster), director and screenplay.”

It’s been six years since the last horror movie nomination for Oscar’s Best Picture, and this year, Get Out has been nominated for four different categories: best picture, best actor, best director and best screenplay.

Get Out was released on February 24th, 2017 by Universal Studios. The one hour and forty four minute R-rated movie had high praise from both casual movie viewers to experienced movie critics, receiving a 7.7 out of 10 star rating on the movie’s iMDb page and a 99% approval rate from the popular movie critic website Rotten Tomatoes. Wikipedia adds that “The film was praised by critics for Peele’s screenplay and direction, Kaluuya’s performance, and subject matter. It was chosen by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time magazine as one of the top 10 films of the year. The film was also a box office success, grossing $255 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget.”

Dolphin Helena Dickens ‘18 says, “It was a good movie that kept you in suspense. And the ending had a good twist and I liked it.”

The director and screenplay writer Jordan Peele is famous for his short comedic sketch videos on the YouTube channel Key & Peele and the comedy television channel Comedy Central.

An entirely new perspective is presented by the author of an article titled “‘Get Out’ Should Definitely Win The Oscar For Best Picture. Here’s Why” Joe Berkowitz. Mr. Berkowitz writes “Get Out is a unicorn movie—at once timeless and extremely relevant, in addition to being utterly original. Nobody can seem to tell whether it actually is a horror movie or a thriller, and the Golden Globes somehow saw fit to categorize it as a Comedy.”
