Club Talk Second Episode 12/13 Review

Club Talk is a new show on DubTV that seeks to inform students about the various clubs present around the school. While I praise the show for being useful beyond solely entertainment and believe that it is a good start, there is still work to be done to improve the show. I am reviewing their most recent episode on Episode 511 on DubTV December 13th, 2017.

Right from the beginning we see an intro that includes an blurry generic gif showing little white figures that have nothing to do with what the text is saying. Accompanying the visual is a club dance beat in the background that one could imagine only came from the intro to the latest episode of Access Hollywood or some other celebrity, “news” source.

The next shot takes place in the WY Gallery, a familiar site that most students would recognize. This choice of location provides a refreshing change to the usual plain and uninteresting backgrounds on most shows of DubTV. The WY Gallery is a unique space that probably could be made into its own segment on DubTV if someone made it in a way that showcased the art well.

My only issue with the location choice is the lighting. Rather than the crisp white light they would have if they used an external light or automatic camera settings, the shot is dimly lit and makes the less appealing as a result. Carolina Villanueva, 18’ comments that Club Talk and DubTV in general need, “front lighting for the hosts.”

The content of the show is good and provides an informative overview, but still needs improvements. Brian Carlson, 18’, said, “Club Talk is bland maybe make it more like a talk show because just notices are boring.  The conversation in my class increased when that segment came on so add a little extra to it.” In addition to Brian’s comment I would like to suggest including some sort of shared calendar that people could access via their CPS Google account on the Beacon website. Club owners could update the calendar with daily meetings and provide some brief summary of what they do, drawing traffic to clubs and the Beacon website Another approach would be to make a section on the Beacon website for club presidents to put up information and have their own club biographies that students could view.
