On December 6, 2017, the Whitney Young Boys Varsity basketball team started playing their conference games against the other teams in the Red-West conference.

 

The first conference game was against Marshall Metropolitan High School at Whitney Young. The Dolphins secured the win and had a few great players of the game. Senior guard and captain, Javon Freeman, had 19 points and 5 rebounds. Junior guard, Myles Baker, had 15 points with 6 rebounds. Senior point guard and captain, Xavier Castaneda, also had 15 points with 3 rebounds and 5 assists. The Dolphins ended up winning with a score of 67-51. Freeman said, “It was a great start to the conference game season. If we continue to possess the great team chemistry we had on the court today, we will be in great shape.”

 

On December 8, 2017, the second conference game was played against Farragut Career Academy at Farragut. The Dolphins struggled to gain the desired lead but ended up changing the pace of the game after halftime. Sophomore transfer from DePaul College Prep, Elliott Sieger, made his season debut. Xavier Castaneda led the team with 22 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds. Myles Baker was next with 11 points and 3 rebounds. Javon Freeman had 10 points and senior guard and captain, Justin Boyd, led the team in rebounds with 8 rebounds and 5 points. The Dolphins stuck through and gained a victory with a score of 63-54.

 

The Dolphins’ next game was against Prosser Career Academy on December 13, 2017 at Whitney Young. This was another game in which the Dolphins struggled to gain a consistent lead before halftime. On the other hand, Javon Freeman led the team with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. Next up was senior forward, Jake Kosakowski, with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 1 block. Sophomore guard, Elliot Sieger had his first good game with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. The Dolphins won against the Prosser Eagles 75-58.

 

The Dolphins took a break from the Chicago conference games and took a trip down to Dallas, Texas to participate in the 2017 ARS Rescue Rooter National Hoopfest. The team faced DeSoto High School on December 16, 2017 at Lancaster High School. This was one of the most energy-filled games this year. Both teams switched off taking the lead then Elliot Sieger made a 3-point shot with 1 minute left in the 4th quarter, with an assist from Justin Boyd, to secure the lead enough to win the game. Javon Freeman finished with 33 points, Justin Boyd with 12 points, and Myles Baker with 10 points. Javon Freeman also won the 2017-2018 MVP title. The Dolphins secured the win with a score of 71-66.

 

The Dolphins look to continue their winning streak and they are keeping their eyes on the prize. Senior captain, Xavier Castaneda, said, “We are taking it one game at a time as we get closer and closer to winning a conference, city, and state championship.”

Their next game is on Friday, December 22, 2017 at Lincoln Park High School against Lincoln Park at 6:30 PM. The Dolphins are also playing in the 2017 Proviso West Holiday Tournament from December 27-30, 2017 and are looking to defend their championship title.
