The Young Theater Company is known around the city of Chicago for putting on spectacular productions with minimal help from adults and teachers. The Company is made up of about 100 students from 7th to 10th grade and each year they put on two productions. This year’s winter play is entitled “The Good Times Are Killing Me” and is based on the life of its writer, Lynda Barry. The play takes place in Seattle in the early 1960s and chronicles young Edna Arkins’ childhood experiences. The production deals with relationships, social pressures, and growing up, but we spoke to a couple of the actors to understand why this play is worth seeing. Connor Geary 18’, who plays Edna’s father in the show says that, “while this is a play set in the 1960s, I think everyone in the audience can relate to the characters. It’s hilarious, it’s sad, and it’s heartfelt. It’s got something for everyone.” Lauren Redman 18’, who acts as Edna’s mother agrees, adding “music is the true star of this show. It inspires every interaction and contributes to everything that happens.” It seems that this play has different aspects that will appeal to a variety of people. Make sure to go see the play on November 17, 18, and 30, or December 1 and 2, and check The Young Company’s Facebook page for updates!
