Amira Young! Top Track Star in the State!

Justin Boyd

Amira Young ‘18 has asserted herself as the top runner in the state of Illinois. Throughout her years at Whitney Young she has broken records, set personal records for herself, and has won a state championship for the 200m run just as a sophomore! She has won city in the 100m, 200m, and the 400m dashes and her team won the city championship in those dashes as well. Those are just the accomplishments she has achieved for herself just at Whitney Young alone. She also runs during the summer time and during the summer she became an All-American in the 200m and qualified as one of the top runners at a National USATF track meet.

I recently talked to Amira Young and received a quote for her on how she feels going into her last year being able to run track for Whitney Young. “Going into my last year of high school track, I feel like I have responsibility on my shoulders now because I’m considered one of the older leaders of the team. Not that being a leader on my team is new to me, but with it being my last year I feel like I really have to make this season count for myself and my teammates. This means setting personal goals for preseason and season training, having an idea on what times I want to run this year, knowing what titles I want to win this season, and of course know what college I’ll be continuing my track career with. For my team I will make sure we set goals for training, develop a winner’s mindset and know what championships to compete for. We have won three consecutive City Championships and we plan on making it four this year. We have a lot stored for the season!”
