If you were to ask any other CPS high school about their homecoming game, they would assume they would be watching a football game. Different than many other years, Whitney Young normally has had a football game for homecoming weekend. Unfortunately, we had to end our football season due to the lack of players. So, we didn’t want to risk our players getting injured so we decided to make the homecoming game a soccer game. We still honored the team and the seniors on the team and thanked them for all their hard work. This year we embraced a different approach and cheered on our Varsity Boys Soccer team as they ran up and down the field against Curie. It was a lot of school spirit as we sold more than 400 tickets and had over 3 buses of students. Students and teachers came out in their orange and blue gear. Also, we were very fortunate to have the game on such a nice day because it was in the high 70’s. The senior girls still had their traditional of running onto the field at halftime and celebrating with the rest of their 2018 class. Diamond Stiles ’20 said “It was fun and gave the soccer team an opportunity to play for a big crowd and have support.” It was different to see how the students would approach such a sudden change but it was a successful homecoming. I asked Brooklyn Fort-Davis ’19 about how she felt about us having a soccer game instead of a football game this year, she said “It was a weird feeling because soccer is boring to watch but she didn’t mind because our soccer team is very talented.” It was a very competitive game but the dolphins got the victory and scored 3 goals to the condors 0. Congrats to our Varsity Boys Soccer team on the win!
