What to expect at your first pep rally

Homecoming is considered one of the most exciting times of the year at Whitney Young. What makes homecoming so special is definitely the amount of school spirit that radiates throughout the halls. Every day of spirit week brings fun and crazy outfits, but the most popular day is the day of the pep rally. Now, if you are an incoming seventh grader or freshman, I’m sure you’re probably freaking out about how to survive your first pep rally. Well, Laila Latta ‘20 was kind enough to share some tips on what to expect at your first one. Pep rally day (aka Orange and Blue Day) is when the entire school gathers into the gym to celebrate the big game day. Upon arrival in the gym, you will be greeted with the booming sound of the band and the roaring chatter among other students. When asked what her initial reactions were, Laila recalled, “I felt really excited and happy especially because it was my first pep rally. It made me happy that I picked Whitney as my first choice.” After the band plays and the choir sings, our school’s dance teams put on a performance. First to perform is the cheer squad. According to Mackenzie Beckham ‘18, “Cheer is really loud and helps to pump you up for the game.” Next to perform is Poms, which Laila describes as having “the best dances.” Last, but not least, is Guys and Dolls. By far the most popular dance team, Mackenzie thinks they have “the best songs.” Finally, the boys’ football team runs out as GnD is finished. This is definitely the most hyped part about pep rally for Deztinee Geiger ‘18 because she stated, “When the football team came out I felt more ready for the game.” After the boys run out, Dr. Kenner gives one of her famous speeches. Deztinee says, “When Dr. Kenner talks she is always really funny and proud of the school and the kids.” So, after Dr. Kenner fires everyone up for the game, the band plays the school song and everyone joins in harmony to sing and this wraps up the exceptional occasion. Now that I have walked you through the sequence of events, I hope you feel electrified and prepared to have fun at your first ever pep rally at Whitney Young. Don’t forget to wear orange and blue!
