Senioritis Conquered

Imani Arnett

Honestly, what even is “senioritis”? Mr. Tejano once described it as “an egocentrism with oneself and a sluggishness to comply and complete schoolwork throughout the second semester”. Like, really? It probably did not occur to most seniors that they are considered equivalent to self absorbed losers. Senioritis is not a disease that is plaguing young personalities. Instead, it is more of a simple mindset. Why is it looked at in such harsh terms?

The Urban Dictionary definition describes it as a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance. Now does that seem as bad? Snapchat even released a filter for it on Friday, May 5th, glorifying the end of the school year.

Sure many seniors have checked out after they received college acceptances. Jakyla Morales even stated, “I’ve had senioritis since my sophomore year, that’s two years of doing nothing.” Meanwhile, some of us spend most of our class time prom shopping or figuring out how to finesse those grades. These all seem completely logical, correct? See, you are starting the next chapter of your life, you have basically finished everything you need to do here, so why not fade away? But, in reality, these are not goals you want to strive for.

You should try to make the most of your time here. The real world is vastly different and you will soon miss and cherish the time you had at your high school. Yea if you are tired of the same ole’ Whitney Young, that is acceptable. Seniors have done their time. They are now ready to get out! But, even if this applies to you, do not forget that you are still a student here. As our senior advisor Ms. El Amin says, “Seniors!! It is not all about you.” Not to be a Debby downer, but she may be correct.
