Club Spotlight: Chicago Dance Marathon

Sam Shuman

Not many students can say they look forward to dancing for thirteen hours straight. Members of Whitney Young’s Chicago Dance Marathon Club will probably say otherwise. “If you are looking to have fun, exercise, and make a change, then this is the club for you,” says Quinn Gorman (‘17), a three-year member of the club. Benefiting Lurie Children’s Hospital, the club fundraises from the beginning of the school year through February leading up to the actual “dance marathon” with the patients benefited at the end of the month. Detail-obsessed planning and avid participation throughout the year builds a camaraderie that pays off with an entire day of bliss. President Sydney Schwartz (‘17) said: “The club is a blast, something I’ve really looked forward to year after year.” The marathon itself consists of a wide array of fun including face painting, bouncy houses, ping pong, and of course, dancing. Most importantly, the club gets to do all of this with the patients.

Each and every club member truly seems to enjoy being a part of the team. Member Gabi Saul (‘17) said: “Where else can you find a school club where everyone is so close with each other and want to exercise for thirteen hours straight?” The club was truly a hit, drawing in over eighty participants this year, almost doubling their membership from last year.

Whitney Young’s Chicago Dance Marathon Club is an exciting, feel-good, and powerful group that has made itself a prominent force throughout the school. It has some of the happiest, most dedicated team members and it seems to only be getting better.
