Five Reasons You Should Read More

Iris Postma

Reading may seem like a chore, and in everyone’s busy lives, it is something not everyone makes time for especially when watching TV or just going to sleep is easier. However, reading is very beneficial… Check out five reasons you should read more!

  1. Reading reduces stress

High school students are very stressed out! Sometimes, that stress can be overwhelming but studies show that reading (for fun, not for class) can reduce your stress levels. Reading silently for only six minutes will ease tension in your muscles and slow down your heart rate.

  1. Reading can be free entertainment

Netflix, Hulu, and cable all cost money. If you want to pay for your books, you can do that, but you can also head to your library and get thousands and thousands of books for free! You know what they say in Arthur, “Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card!”

  1. Reading before bed can help you fall asleep

Most of us probably look at our phones right before we go to sleep, which studies have shown is very bad for you because the blue light of the phone will make it harder for you to fall asleep. Instead, put down your phone and pick up a book. Not only will you be more relaxed, but it will be easier for you to fall asleep.

  1. Reading is a mental stimulant

High school might be a little young to think about Alzheimer’s and dementia, but studies show that reading and being more mentally stimulating can slow the progress and even halt Alzheimer’s and dementia. It’s never to early to pick up a healthy, life long habit!

  1. You learn from reading

Books are full of knowledge in so many different forms, and the more you read the more you will know. Reading is definitely a better form of learning than studying for a test!
Reading is good for your heart and your brain. Next time you’re bored or stressed, pick up a book!
