App Review: Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links

Alex Rodea, Savage

Saturday mornings were always crucial to us when we were children. Waking up and watching shows like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, as well as other cartoons on Nick and Cartoon Network while eating breakfast was a common thing in the lives of many children. Now, it is tough to say that many people still follow that routine after having passed the appropriate time in life considered as “childhood.” Nonetheless with a continuing surge for technology and applications we saw the phase of Pokémon GO come and go, and now Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links has taken the spotlight.

This app was introduced to Japan in a initial beta version on November 17, 2016. Then, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links was released to the rest of the world on January 11, 2017. Since then, the app has celebrated 40 million downloads on April 21, 2017. Although it seems to have reached a large portion of the world, some people are not aware of it. A Norwegian student on a class trip was perplexed when shown the application. Victor said, “I have no idea what that is…” which was surprising. He further explain “I lived in France, Dubai, Qatar, and Norway so I never experienced things like that.” This was understandable since Victor is 15 and the show aired in 2000 and ended in 2004.
