Saturday Night Live made “Drag Race” “herstory” by featuring a sketch in which five presumably straight auto mechanics gushed over their love of “Rupaul’s Drag Race”. “Drag Race” features 12-14 drag queens who compete to win a $100,000 grand prize, a year’s supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics, a crown provided by fierce drag jewels, and title of America’s Next Drag Superstar. Every episode the queens compete in challenges such as sewing, acting, dancing, and more to avoiding having to “Lip Sync For Their Lives” to stay another episode.

The auto mechanics in this sketch begin talking about the show when Chris Pine’s’ character “Marcus” says he stumbled upon it and watched. As he vaguely discusses the show and current front runner Trinity “The Tuck” Taylor, the other mechanics add in details clearly pretending to not enjoy the show. Finally Kenan Thompson’s character “Doc” breaks and reassures that they all watch the show. Upon admitting their love for the show, Bobby Moynihan’s character “Buck” challenges Marcus to a lip sync. The two battle it out to Erika Jayne’s single “XXPEN$IVE.” Doc plays the role of Rupaul by characteristically telling Marcus “Shantey you stay” and telling Buck to “Sashay away” both popular catchphrases of Ru’s.

This sketch is truly iconic because Drag Race has become a mainstream hit since its move to VH1 from LogoTV for its 9th season. The show has been nominated for and won several awards in the past year including Rupaul’s first Emmy as “Best Reality Show Host” and an MTV Movie and TV award for “Best Reality Competition.”

Many students at Whitney Young also enjoy the show; Jahi Owens ‘19, local gay and avid drag race watcher, had this to say “This show has been an outlet and an escape for the LGBT community for a very long time… The show was presented in an extremely funny, respectful way that summarizes the joy of almost any viewer who has the opportunity to see this amazing show. Bravo SNL!”

Alexa Soto ‘18, niece of drag race hopeful “Gee Oh” said “The skit really brought to light that anyone can enjoy watching RuPaul’s Drag Race because it is SICKENING.”

Trinity “The Tuck” Taylor herself in an interview with Billboard discussed meeting straight male fans at “Rupaul’s Drag Con” Convention in Los Angles, “At DragCon, I just met so many straight men that were with their girlfriends and wives that were just giddy at the fact that they were meeting me.” This skit could be an opportunity for straight men to come out and show their love for this show. In the words of Mother Ru “If you can’t love yourself how in the hell you gonna love somebody else!”
