Music For Studying: Lo-Fi

Myles Gibbs, Writer

Lo Fi (Low Fidelity) Hip Hop is the best study music ever to grace my ears. The way the the steady, smooth beat intrigues the part of the brain seemingly always seeking stimulation. The way the the white noise, accented by crisp chords, moves the outside world into the background, yet all the while staying simple – staying calm enough – to not distract the focus. A pioneer of Lo Fi hip hop was an artist hailing from Tokyo, Japan, who went by the name of Nujabes. He passed away at the dreadfully young age of 36 as a result of a traffic accident. He pioneered in combining jazz melodies and hip hop rhythms, making way for what would become Lo Fi hip hop. There were many notable tributes to him following his death, in which the genre became established. Shing02 performs tribute concerts to this day in memory of his passing back in 2010. In 2013, Australian artist Ta-ku released “25 nights for Nujabes,” in which he mixed a beat every day for 25 days in Nujabes’s memory. If you are a student, a worker, or anyone who seeks some focus in their everyday experience, I compel you try out lo-fi hip hop.
