If you are under the age of 27, you most likely have a Snapchat. Snapchat is a social media platform where a user can send pictures or videos with captions or drawings that last up to ten seconds before they disappear. Additionally, users can post Stories, which are available for friends to view an unlimited number of times for 24 hours. The app is available for IOS and Android, and came out in 2011 but didn’t become very popular until 2013, when it completely blew up. “I think Snapchat is a great app,” comments Andrea Benatar ‘18, “It allows me to showcase the art I make and allows me to see what my friends are doing without having to ask them.” A Norwegian exchange student, Alexander Dahl ‘19, who recently visited Whitney Young, says, “Snapchat is the perfect app for young people. You don’t have to be formal or worry about what you should post because only people your age will be viewing your content. You can just be yourself and express yourself however you want.” Alexander mentioned that he spends about 3 hours a week using Snapchat and he prefers it over similar apps like Instagram because it requires less thinking when posting something. “I’ve been using Snapchat for three years now and it is still one of the main apps I use. I love the feeling of receiving a Snapchat. The uncertainty of what the delivered message will be keeps me hooked. Everyone loves a surprise, and I’m always excited to find out what that surprise is.” Snapchat’s versatility and simplicity have captivated millions of teenagers and has become one of most popular apps on the market.
