New Sounds, Same Instruments: The Burns Twins

Iz Burns left, Eddie Burns right.

Eddie grabs the sticks and Iz grabs his trumpet; together these two the make the popular duo, also known as The Burns Twins. Despite just coming to fame, The Burns Twins have been surrounded by music their entire lives. Their father, Stephen Burns, is a worldwide famous trumpeter. So, I guess you can say they have had a head start in learning the components of music. Also known as a teacher, Stephen Burns has taught some other popular musical figures, such as Whitney Young graduate, Nico Segal. Coincidentally, it turns out that Nico Segal is a huge inspiration for the twins, and has been helpful to the duo’s rise in fame. With the use of that inspiration, The Burns Twins X Kaina X Medows were able to create their first ever EP, Sweet Asl. Sweet Asl was released late summer in 2016, and immediately caught the public’s attention. Today, the EP has reached a grand total of about 860 likes on Soundcloud, with their top song, Honey, reigning in over 79,000 listens. Although rather short, this EP is full of uplifting R&B and soul that is relatively new to Chicago’s music scene. With the valiant efforts of The Burns Twins, Chicago music is starting to restore the elements of “natural” music by using actual instruments. When asked how they feel about The Burns Twins emergence to Chicago’s music scene, Mikol Tsopnang ‘18 said, “ I think they are really inspiring and it makes me really happy to know Chicago kids are making it big; they have a great and original sound”. To add on to that question, Quinn Riley ‘18 said, “I think they’re bringing a mix of a killer instrumentals and great beat production that gives off a unique Chicago sound.” To add a last thought to that question, Tiffany Gradzki ‘18 said, “They put themselves out there and make really interesting sounds. Also, their concerts are so fun and energetic.” Despite being a new young group, The Burns Twins are adding an ultramodern sound to Chicago that is soulful and vibey. Currently, The Burns Twins are performing their music and enjoying their lives as musicians. Specifically, Iz is taking a semester off from college to focus on music, and Eddie is officially the new drummer for The O’My’s. Hopefully, The Burns Twins will be able to create more music because Chicago is eager to see new soulful sounds like theirs. To learn more about the group, visit www.burnstwins.com
