I AM SHE

Living in a predominantly male run society, it is important for women to stand together as one. Often times they are looked over and seen as inferior, and quite unfairly so. Women are the backbone of society, without women, mankind would not exist.

A club within Whitney Young, I AM SHE, was made specifically to highlight women and empower them. Anyone can join but its main purpose is to have unity among women in the school. This club is also important because it focuses on teens. Teen girls face obstacles every day that they have to overcome. There is bullying, the idea that there is only one perfect girl, depression, and so much more. Girls can come to these meetings and acquire the support they may need. There are guest speakers that will come and give words of wisdom. Discussions are held for pressing issues in today’s modern society. Brookylnn Fort-Davis 19’ explains, “We talk about problems that I see everyday and it gives me ideas on how to handle them better.” You can come to a meeting and feel safe from outside judgement.

Oftentimes people say there are multiple feminist movements, separated by race, age, and sexuality. Since Whitney Young is so diverse, all these seemingly separated groups can now come together. Francesca Quezada 17’ stated, “I joined I Am She because it gives me a sense of belonging and makes me feel stronger.” I Am She not only provides a safe space for girls to share their opinions on world issues, but it allows girls to create a bond with others that reciprocate and support their interests and ideas.

In this club, they also discuss the positive aspects of being a woman in today’s society. Women in the media do monumental things, that may be simple, to empower younger generations of women. For example, with Alicia Keys choosing to go makeup-free and Kelly Clarkson’s song, “Stronger,” women and girls are getting a more positive influence. Asha Abiade, ‘17 feels as if, “Seeing women be fearless, especially when they’re in the spotlight, is very inspiring. This and knowing I’m supported by my peers in I Am She gives me the willpower to make bold decisions.” Join this club to find a group to relate to and get the opportunity to learn about women in today’s society.
