The Ideology of Cosmetology

If you live in the 21st century, the chances you’ve encountered makeup in your lifetime is immensely high. From wearing it yourself, to seeing others close to you stress about the perfect winged liner, the idea of enhancing your facial features with =liquids and powders has become a universal concept. To Nancy Perez ‘19, Co-President of Cosmetology club, makeup nowadays has become a vital tool used by many to gain an extra layer of self confidence. “Makeup is like the cherry on top of a sundae. It adds onto an already great thing but it’s not for everyone,” claims makeup user Lillian Tate ‘17. That is exactly the type of club Nancy Perez ‘19 and April Gonzalez ‘17 host every Thursday in the Arts Building (With the exception of 3rd Thursdays).

Cosmetology Club is centered around feeling beautiful rather than just making something look “beautiful”. A portion of the club does deal with makeup. From lending beauty tips, recommending products and suggesting makeup tutorials on Youtube, just a day in Cosmetology Club will leave you with artistic inspirations for days. However, if lipstick, eyeshadow and foundation aren’t necessarily your cup of tea, the club does do more than talk makeup. Face masks, lip scrubs and hair treatments are also talked over within the club, as “healthy skin is the key to flawless makeup,” says Maira Lara ‘17. These tips are lifesavers and can be made from things you probably have in your home. Milan Hasmonek ‘18 serves as a prime example. “I didn’t even know holding a warm tea bag to my lips could moisturize them,” she says. Furthermore, Cosmetology Club also talk amongst one another, over the importance of self proclaimed beauty. Things such as body hair, acne and other non-traditional beauty stigmas are discussed and often embraced.

The only issue that Co-President April Gonzalez admits there is the lack of gender diversity. “We as a club feel as though makeup and the right to feel beautiful is not female exclusive,” she says. However, to combat this stigma, the club allows free makeovers to male and nonconforming students, and will offer tips and guidance to anyone interested in the club, so long as notified with ample time. If you’re interested in getting a makeover or simply joining the club, be sure to contact either Nancy Perez ([email protected]) or April Gonzalez ([email protected]). Or you can meet in the Arts Building any Thursday.
