Boys Golf: Season Recap

The WY Boys Golf Team entered the city championship in uncharted waters on Sunday, October, 2nd, 2016. They hadn’t managed to qualify as the number one team in the city, which was rare for the team. Despite this adversity, the boys are the City Champions of 2016. According to team member Isaiah Holmes, “The season was very challenging, but very rewarding after winning first place.” After a very busy and hard season, they finished strong. The team took second in City Playoffs, losing to Payton-Jones then advanced to the City Championship where they placed first, beating Payton-Jones 310-326. Sophomore, Thomas Hayes said, “We had to overcome countless obstacles this season, but we stayed focused, outworked our opponents, brought the title back where it belongs and had the time of our lives doing so.” Hayes also shot the lowest score with a 69. Whitney Young students are happy with the title, yet unsurprised with the victory. Sophomore, Seth Vargas exclaimed, “Marcellus is the GOAT! I’ve heard that he’s been on varsity since his freshman year. He’s been unstoppable for 4 years and he makes it look so easy. He’s the Okafor of golf!”

The team worked very hard to achieve something they believed was rightfully theirs. The boys were able to grasp the first city championship of many for the Whitney Young Dolphin sports program of the 2016-17 school year.
