The Young Company is gearing up yet again for another phenomenal spring play. This year, the actors and crew are preparing to showcase “Fools,” a comic fable.

Art Crew Chief, Mackenzie Cox, ‘16 tells us that, “Fools is different from She Kills Monsters because the audience can really connect with each other while just kicking back and having fun. It’s easy to find a deeper meaning in parts of the play but that’s not necessarily the point. It’s also nice to just enjoy the show.”

Written by Neil Simon, “Fools” takes place in a small village of Ukraine named Kulyenchikov during the late 19th century. The story follows Leon Steponovich Tolchinsky (Keegan Bowman, ‘17), a schoolteacher who takes a new job educating Sophia (Hannah Hawkins, ‘18), the daughter of Doctor Zubritsky (Connor Geary, ‘18) and his wife, Lenya (Amanda Hoyne, ‘16).

He is absolutely ecstatic until he soon learns that there is a curse on the village that makes everyone stupid. When he arrives, he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking cows upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with Chronic Stupidity for 200 years. It’s Leon’s job to break the curse. Unfortunately, no one tells him that if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse that, he too, will become stupid. Complications ensue when Leon falls in love with Sophia, a girl so stupid that she has only recently learned to sit down.

This folktale comedy is something you certainly don’t want to miss. Costumes Crew Chief Lia Cernauskas, ‘16 describes “Fools” as “an opportunity to enjoy yourself and just laugh. The play has an underlying message, but the point is to allow people to forget about their problems and focus on the jokes.”

You certainly wouldn’t want to miss the amazing talent that WY brings on stage and behind the curtains. Under the direction of Mr. Winkler, all WY plays are possible due to the dedication of the students that commit hours upon hours to set construction, props creation and costume design.

Natalia Perez, ‘19, a member of Costumes Crew, says, “It’s great to be part of something like [the Young] Company because we are taken seriously even though we’re so young.”
