Uber makes cabs irrelevant

These days finding a ride and getting where you need to go is easier than ever. With ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft, you’ll never have to hail another taxi again. These apps allow you to put in the address where you want to be picked up at and wait comfortably for your driver to arrive. You no longer have to run out into the street searching frantically for a cab to take you where you need to go on time. Sure you could call a cab to your house, but who wants to wait in the dark for a cab to arrive? Just use a ridesharing app and track where your driver is and how long it will be until he can pick you up.

Not only are ridesharing services like Uber more convenient that taking cabs, but they’re cheaper too. The UberX base fare is $1.70 with an additional 20 cents per minute and 90 cents per mile. Yellow Cab Chicago taxis which have a base fare of $3.25 with an additional 20 cents per mile and 20 cents per 36 seconds in the cab. Yellow Cab taxis also come with fees that UberX rides don’t, such as fees for each additional passenger between the ages of 12 and 65 as well as a tip if you decide to leave one.

Some people worry about safety, however drivers of ridesharing companies mostly go under the same background checks cab drivers do. For example, all Uber drivers undergo a three-step criminal background check including county, federal, and multi-state checks similar to what taxicab drivers are submitted to by the city they’re driving in. As far as insurance, Uber has you more than covered with up to $1 million of liability insurance per incident, while taxi companies usually carry about $330,000.

Ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft are a more convenient, cheaper, and safer way to get to where I need to go.
