One may recognize Wanda Thompson on their daily walk through the doors of WY as the friendly security guard with a persistent smile on her face. Thompson, who has the responsibility of checking students IDs and making sure no unauthorized intruder enters the school, has been a security guard at WY for ten years now, and gets constant enjoyment from her job. “Watching the kids come in every morning is by far my favorite part of the job, particularly because for the most part the students are very smart and polite,” says Thompson. Thompson began working at WY in 2004, when her daughter attended as a sophomore. Her daughter’s persistent praise of WY was what initially drove Thompson to consider pursuing a job at WY. “Being that close to my daughter made travel and everything more efficient. I definitely got attached to the school so I stayed after she graduated,” Thompson remarks. Although Thompson has an overall positive outlook on her job, she also has the unfortunate task of dealing with school intruders, as well as students who forget their IDs. Ever since the recent intrusion and theft by outsiders, security guards have been forced to step their game up to a whole new level. The necessity of alertness has never been higher for the sole purpose of keeping the students and faculty of WY safe.
