The Academy snubs actors

When the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were released, there was an outcry on its’ lack of diversity, as no people of color had been nominated in categories of Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress.

The most notable snubs include David Oyelowo for his portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr, in the film “Selma” and “Selma” director Ava Duvernay, who would’ve been the first black woman nominated for a Best Director award.

Subsequently, Twitter users started to protest with the hashtag “#OscarsSoWhite,” which adds to the fact that 93 percent of Academy members are white and 76 percent male, with an average age of 63 years old.

An Oscar snub like this hasn’t happened since the 70th Academy Awards which also had a clear lack of diversity in its nominations in 1998.
