The Friends of Whitney Young and New Chapter Entertainment recently launched its Campaign of Champions Fundraiser to raise money to improve WY’s facilities through the documentary about WY, “Selected.”

While other selective enrollment high schools like Jones and Payton have received millions of dollars to expand and renew their facilities, WY has had the same facility for the last 40 years.

“[The] December 1 & 2 meetings kick-off the campaign, and the campaign will continue until we reach our goal of raising $500,000,” said Deb Keegan, a Friends of Whitney Young chair. “The money raised from the campaign will be used to improve the facilities at WY, including lunchrooms, lockers, science labs, locker rooms, library and more.”

According to an email sent by Keegan, larger donations will be rewarded with more perks.

“People who donate $1,000 or more are considered sponsors, and can have their name (or their company’s name) on the opening or closing credits of “Selected.” They will also receive tickets to the “Selected” Red Carpet Premiere which takes place on April 16, 2015,” said Keegan.

The idea of a documentary about WY was initially created as a fundraiser for the school, but the project has grown to become a medium to tell the story of WY.

The documentary follows five current juniors and seniors, three aspiring dolphins, as well as several administration members and teachers to give multiple perspectives on what it means to be a dolphin.

Kayla McCormick, director and executive Producer of “Selected” has been a producer for several high level productions including “The Oprah Winfrey show,” “The Barbara Walters Specials,” and “Oprah’s Next Chapter.” She has also worked on projects for The History Channel and PBS.

The campaign has already raised $130,000 in donations and pledges, which is a fraction of their $500,000 goal.
