Go with the flow? Or is the flow a no go?

Is long hair attractive on men?

The new hot style and slang for this generation’s long hair  is the “flow”. The longer hairstyle is for men and boys alike. At Whitney it all started with hockey and lacrosse players, but it soon spread to anyone who was trying to break away from the boring businessman haircut.

The hairstyle is not only simple to style and easily pull off,  it is also an easy way to grab a girls attention . All of this year’s hottest celebrities and teen heart throbs are all rocking the flow. Stars like Harry Styles, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt have all participated in this year’s hottest trend, making it what girls are starting to look for in guys.

The long hair not only looks good on guys but it also shows a quality in men that short hair does not. The easy short hair cut shows little to no effort. If a guy has long hair you can tell that they have put time into styling it or gelling it back for a sleek look. Even the casual look of having it in headband like many athletes do is a fresh, new look for guys now. Long hair definitely catches people’s attention and is worth the time to grow out.

To flow or not to flow— that is the question. Long, luscious, voluminous hair is not something only desired by women- men want it too. We have moved past our Bieber days into the era of ‘in season’ Patrick Kane, Pirates of the Caribbean Johnny Depp, and early 2000’s Ashton Kutcher. Thick hair that goes past the neckline is “in”, but should it be here to stay? On paper, messily slicked back long hair may look good. From a far, it may look a little better. But when you get a closer look or you graze your hand by it, it loses all its mystery and intrigue.

Short hair is called an easy-going cut for a reason; all you really need to do is take a shower and let it dry. But when you grow a few extra inches, you take on a long list of new responsibilities that many men forget to account for and keep up with. For example, showering must become more thorough, tangles may now become an issue so brushing should be added into the morning mix, and lightening up on the grease is a necessity. If you can’t run your fingers through it without picking up some residue, you need to dial it back (this goes for all hair styles).

Don’t get me wrong, some people can pull off the flow, and they probably make it look easy. But it is not. It is not something that should be done for the heck of it. It is a commitment and a job, if you don’t take care of it right, it’ll be a big wrong. Now, if you are not up for the challenge, it’s okay! Because short hair is classic, reliable, easy to care for, suave, and it makes you look more professional and put together.

Welcome men, to the tediousness and complexity that is hair care. All in all, your choice of style is your own, whether you go bald or braid it to your butt it is your call. I just ask that if you choose to go long, please take care of it, because if you don’t, its noticeable and people may start to question your ability to clean yourself. So please, flow with caution.

Sincerely,

Sophia Kreutz
