Athlete’s Spotlight: Belle Cassidy ’15
October 29, 2014
Belle Cassidy ’15, a figure skater and cheerleader, takes time to answer questions about her sport.
1. How long have you been figure skating and where?
Since I was nine, so eight years, at McFetridge.
2. How did you start skating?
I used to play baseball when I was younger and the field was across the street from the rink. So I started going there after practice and then eventually I quit baseball and started skating full time.
3. How often do you practice skating?
Five times a week, before school on Tuesday and Thursday, and in the evening on Monday, Sunday, and Saturday.
4. Most students know you as one of the main flyers on the cheer team, was that something you took up after you started skating?
Yeah, I wanted to cheer in high school, it was one of those things I always wanted to try. Plus, they have really cool uniforms.
5. How do you split (no pun intended) your time between the two? Do they ever conflict?
I usually cheer after school and skate before and on the weekends. The two conflict sometimes and it’s usually around competitions. Sophomore year I had nationals for ice dance far away the same week that we were doing choreography for cheer. It’s something that you learn to make work.
6. Do you think that a skate team at WY could be feasible?
That would be interesting to see. We could do a combined team with other schools like the hockey club that has kids from WY, Latin and other schools.
7. Are you looking at colleges/ planning on continuing to skate in college?
I want to go to Miami of Ohio because they have a synchronized skating team that represents the US in all the world-wide competitions.
8. What is your favorite thing about skating?
It is something that I have always loved to do. Skating is also something that not many people consider a sport, but it takes a lot of time, dedication, and natural skill, so why waste that?
