Once again, the Whitney Young Girls varsity volleyball team are city champions. At the top of the Chicago Public Super League and led by new head Coach Micheal Quevedo, the Dolphins ended 27-10 overall and 11-0 within their conference. Despite their hard loss to Oak Park River Forest this year at the regional finals, the 2022 squad put up a tough, long fight, and although they fell short of a shot at redemption downstate, the team is proud of how they performed overall. “I think we had a very special team this season,” senior captain and Colgate commit Ava Schabes said. 

Going two sets to zero against Von Steuben, Chicago Washington, Brooks, Kennedy, and Lindblom, the team has put in the work to repeat last year’s city championship. Their resilience was tested, going to tiebreakers against their two archrivals, Jones and Lane Tech, besting both in three games.  

On the offensive end, Ava Schabes (#5) had a standout season with 809 assists and 52 serving aces. Teammate Jordan Rogers (#13) also held her own, putting away 249 balls with 32 aces. On the defensive side, senior Sydni Poston (#1) has barely let a ball fall, racking up 358 digs so far. “I love watching them play,” says Ms. Bartkus, a JV mom.

It is safe to say the team truly showed out this season and put their hearts on the court for every game. The ladies continued to exemplify excellence and are eager to pass the ball on to the next season. Senior Leah Kennedy comments, “After 4 years in the program, this year was definitely a year to remember. I am super excited for what is to come.”
