Have you ever wondered what it’s like to take DubTV? Well, when I asked Colin Moy, a producer for DubTV, he said “DubTV is amazing”. And when I asked Jonathan Mui, another producer, what he thought about the class, he said “it’s a film class disguised as an English class”. These are probably the most common responses that you’ll get, but if you want to know more, then this article is for you. I will be doing an in-depth review of Honors 21st Cent Multimedia Lit / DubTV to help you determine if it’s the right fit for you..

In terms of the workload, it varies a lot from week to week. Segments such as Cooking With Jonathan take about 5 hours to film and 3 hours to edit. In contrast, hosting segments only take about 30 minutes to film and 1 hour to edit, so it really depends on what you plan on doing. Personally, I’d recommend doing something that requires the least amount of preparation possible, so you spend less time planning things out and more time actually filming and having fun.

In terms of the difficulty, it’s definitely a little bit challenging at the beginning. When you begin brainstorming ideas and start filming your first segments, you might find it a bit difficult to fully express yourself on camera and it might take a few different ideas to find something that you like. However, once you find something that works, the class becomes a lot easier and making videos feels more like a hobby than an assignment.

In terms of the fulfillment you gain from the class, you really get what you put into it. The class isn’t too strict, so it’s really up to you to decide how much time and effort you want to put into the class. Seeing a final product that you’re proud of is worth all the time and effort you put into it, and it’s what motivates me to come back every week and make a better segment. But this isn’t just my opinion. When I asked Brandon Huang, an editor for DubTV, he said “despite how many lunch periods I’ve sacrificed to DubTV, the finished product is always satisfying to put out”. If you go into the class with a similar mindset, I believe that you will really enjoy it.

In short, I believe that Honors 21st Cent Multimedia Lit is definitely a strong choice for your junior or senior year if you don’t have a preference for other English classes such as AP Lit, Creative Writing, or African American Lit. The overall chill nature of the course along with the fulfillment that you gain from the class is something that you’ll definitely appreciate during some of the most stressful years of your high school experience, and it’s why I highly recommend taking the class.
