Fashion in 2021: How Can We Build from 2020?

Margaret Meyers

2021 marks a fresh start in all aspects of our day-to-day lives following a year of unexpected twists and turns, and fashion is one area that will have some major transformations in the new year. After ten months of wearing sweats and cozy sweatshirts to any activity over Zoom and Google Meets, teens are excited about the upcoming fashion trends predicted for 2021. 2020 saw the rise of tie dye and 90’s retro pieces, many of which will be carried into the new year, such as Dr. Martens and large hair clips. Fashion experts predict that 2021 will bring trench coats, fashion joggers, and wide legged jeans.

The Beacon was eager to speak with some teens from around Chicago about the fashion trends they are excited to experiment with this year, and the ways they developed their style during 2020. Lane Tech junior Katie Ratke ‘22 said, “I’ve heard a lot of people say 2021 will bring back checkered prints, and that bubblegum pink will be a huge trend.” Much like Katie, many teens are excited about the rise of statement patterns, such as zebra print, and are looking to find ways to incorporate patterns into their accessories. Whitney Young senior Libby Codamon ‘21 told the Beacon “In 2020, I swapped out my skinny jeans for boot cut jeans and I’ve been obsessed since. After finding this new staple in my wardrobe, I’ve been able to focus on adding accessories like purses, jewelry, and headpieces.”

The need to stay at home over the past  ten months has influenced some students in ways they did not originally expect. Jones College Prep sophomore Carolina Rondelli ‘23 mentioned that e-learning has helped her develop an individual style. “2020 has helped me develop my style because I haven’t been influenced by what people are wearing at school, and this has helped me find my own style,” Carolina told the Beacon. Much like Carolina, some have turned to adventurous outfits they wouldn’t have worn to school last year, or taken time to thrift new pieces that have unique materials and patterns. Quarantine impacted every age group differently, but rest assured that whatever 2021 brings, teens will face it while also in style.
