AMC Theaters Are Possibly Going Bankrupt at the end of 2020!

The COVID-19 pandemic that rocked America in the early months of 2020 has not shown signs of stopping anytime soon. With this, more and more businesses are closing due to lack of revenue from customers. But small businesses aren’t the only ones closing this year as AMC theaters (and the movie industry in general) have struggled to make it past these last couple months of the year causing them to possibly go bankrupt. Without new films coming out and a lack of customers due to the stay at home order and practices of social distancing, AMC has had no efficient way of making and sort of profit or revenue. Without this, AMC theaters might have to call it quits and file for bankruptcy. “That’s sad because I do love movie theaters.” said Kai Ramire’ 21 in agreement with Alex Ng’21 who added, “It’s a bummer. I have always enjoyed going to the theatres on the weekends with my friends and family.”.

Currently, some AMC theaters are showing old movies like Monsters Inc. and The Nightmare before Christmas but these showings have not pulled in nearly as much attendance as newer movies would have. “To me, there’s just no point in paying to go to a movie theater to go see an old movie I can watch at home. Sure you get the experience but you are also having to account for the many risks you would take to go. Not worth it for me at the moment but I can’t wait to see the new movies that come out once everything is over,” says Enoe Napoles, movie guru and mother of senior Jonathan Napoles. Many people are hoping that AMC will not go bankrupt. but it raises many questions if it were to happen. Will tickets cost more when everything is back to normal? Where will movies be watched? How big of an impact will this have on the movie industry? Only time will tell but one thing is certain, people are hoping for the best.
