Remote Learning

Remember those times when you dreaded going to school and wanted to stay home and sleep? Well, the wish has come true to a certain extent. Remote learning is in effect for many schools across the world. With it comes many problems and challenges. The challenges vary from person to person.  Due to everything being online, some students have struggled to communicate with certain teachers, or staff members. An anonymous senior here at Whitney Young ‘21, says, “Some teachers don’t even try to keep their students engaged. They just talk for the entire period and bam homework due and quiz is tomorrow.” “Some counselors don’t answer their emails when this is the most crucial time especially for seniors. It doesn’t make sense.” Many have felt that there’s been a huge lack of communication between students and teachers, which is making it harder for students to understand what’s going on in their classes. Teachers need to slow down and stop giving assignment after assignment.

A junior, Liliana Castro ‘22, says, “it’s very hard to stay motivated and very easy to get too deep into your thoughts. But I like how I get to wake up later.” Although remote learning does come with many difficulties, a pro is being able to wake up later than usual. Some students wake up before the sun is up in order to make it on time to school. Transportation may also have been a struggle to some students, therefore remote learning could’ve benefitted them in this aspect.

Another junior here at Whitney Young, Jimena Saldana ‘22, says, “I find myself trying just as hard if not more during these times, but it’s still difficult. At the end of the day, I feel so exhausted, and only to do more online work afterwards. Also, I’m not a big fan of daily headaches from staring at a screen all day.” Surely, she’s not the only student who gets a huge headache from staring at the screen all day. Some students are not accustomed to staring at a screen for long periods of times.

Whether remote learning is liked or not, it’s here to stay for a while. If you don’t have the resources, contact the school and they’ll try to help. Here are some tips to stay motivated throughout it. Remote learning is a new concept to everyone and the best thing to do is for teachers and faculty to be more understanding and considerate towards the students and vice versa.
