How is 2020 Treating You

Mitchelle Mojekwu

Though it is still pretty early in the year, the first two months are flying by and many global occurrences have happened lately. Many young artists and athletes have died, coronavirus has been top of the news leads, and a third world war is in question. Seeing that the news and media has made sure to cover negative aspects of this year, it would be nice to know how everyone is doing on a personal level. It is a fresh new semester here at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School and I hope that everyone is setting and achieving their goals. So my questions for the school of champions community are:

How has 2020 been so far for you? What are your hopes for this year? Is there anything you are looking to improve this year?

“Personally it could be better, the weather has taken a toll on my mood and junior frackie workload isn’t really appeasing but I’m very hopeful for what the rest of the year has to bring. I am really looking to improve my test scores in preparation for college apps and to produce solid grades because junior year is the most important year,” expressed Zora Kresak-Kiaer, ‘21.

So as juniors begin their preparation to take their education to a new level some sophomores have other things on their minds.

“I think that there has been a lot of buzz on the news and a lot of talk about worldly topics and elections as well but on a personal level it has been great. I’ve made new friends and I definitely think in comparison to last year, I am trying to be more social and put myself out there more. So far I have been pretty good at it so it’s going smoothly as of now. My hope for this year is to fulfill the motto ‘to live my best life’ because last year was a struggle academically and socially,” responded Sherye Kam, ‘22.

Lastly I conversed with a freshman on their views of 2020.

“2020 has been interesting so far, I definitely think personally it could always be worse. I have adjusted well to my surroundings though. I finally have a solid friend group and I enjoy all the clubs I joined too. My hope for this year is to make it to state for track and field and to keep my grades up,” stated Debbie Mojekwu, ‘23.

Well, there you have it, it seems as though on a personal level everyone is doing better than most would have thought. Though Whitney Young is a quite stressful environment, I am glad to see three of these girls persevering through their troubles and tasks on a daily basis and I hope 2020 treats everyone well.
