The Prom [Dress] Process

Hey, Dolphins! As we enter the brand-new year of 2020 (I don’t know about you all, but I’m loving the symmetry of that more and more), we also enter a brand-new season – this one more senior-specific. I’m talking about Prom!

While many of us have already laid eyes on our dream gowns and started to brainstorm accessories, some of us are still in the window shopping phase of preparation. Here to help, these are a few guidelines on finding the perfect fit for you. Enjoy!

  1. Start collecting ideas. If you don’t quite know what your perfect dress looks like, visit a boutique (or a few!) to find some inspirations. Peaches Boutique is a popular retail location among Dolphins. Tip: you may not (and probably won’t) find one sole dress that checks every single one of your boxes, and that’s okay. After all, you’re just looking. 🙂
  2. Make a list, sketch a drawing, etc. to get your ideas out and about. This way, when you’re looking – either online or the next time you’re out shopping – you have solid benchmarks to lead from. Lunss seems to be a great online tool for manifesting those ideas.
  3. Consider shopping at secondhand outlets! These are a phenomenal way to shop more affordably, sustainably, and ethically. And because prom can be expensive, for those of us who may not have the extra money to dedicate to a new gown, organizations like The Glass Slipper Project and Becca’s Closet are here to help! Plus, all of this could mean that you have more resources for tip #4…
  4. Tailoring! If your dream dress is lacking in poof, pep, bounce, or flounce – honestly, you name it – reach out to a boutique or alterations shop to assess and fix the problem. Whether you need something taken in or a little something extra, this could be the missing link between you and the finished product.
  5. While it’s easy to forget about the details in the grand scheme of prom shopping, don’t be afraid to top off your fantastic fit with some glitz. For a simple set, consider going all out for makeup (a bold lip or a catching cat-eye); for a bold assortment, think about letting your hair down (wherever it falls, if it falls); for a flowy fit, browse dainty necklace-earring pairs. This brings us to our final recommendation, #6.
  6. Although these guidelines are here for your benefit, you have to know yourself. You are the expert on your personal style, preferences, likes, and dislikes. Try to have some fun with your ensemble – in the end, it doesn’t really matter what eye shadow you use or which color compliments you best. Remember: you’ve got this, every body is a prom body, and when you feel good, you look good. So long as you own it, your prom experience will truly be one for the books.

Don’t forget to purchase your prom ticket(s) in the school store for $125 each, and good luck! <3
