Winter Sports Update

This winter has been exciting for sports both within Whitney Young and outside the school community. Firstly, the bowling team had a great season. Jeffery Hudson ‘20 and Jack Turken ‘20, qualified for the city bowling tournament and when asked about the future Jack Turken said, “This year has been great. There’s a lot of talent on this team and I know that I’m leaving the team in good hands for next year,” a nod to his younger teammates, especially fellow individual city qualifier, Lewis Baer ‘21, who said “This year was awesome. These guys have been leaders and mentors for me since the first day of tryouts. It’s going to be hard to see them go but I know that they’ve left their mark and prepared us to be able to continue to compete.” The basketball team has been having a successful year sporting a positive record. They play North Lawndale at home on the 17th, tune in to Espn 3 on the 19th to watch the broadcast of their game in Springfield, Massachusetts, and make sure to attend the game on the 22nd at Lane Tech to support the team against their rivals, the Lane Tech Indians. Outside of Whitney, results for the National Baseball Hall of Fame are set to be released on January 21st and among others, Derek Jeter was on the ballot this year. The world would be shocked if such a well known and universally accepted great did not receive unanimous votes to be selected for the hall. A 14x all-star and World Series MVP (2000), Jeter is essentially a shoe in for the Hall. However, anything is possible and the results aren’t guaranteed! Even if Jeter is elected, it could still cause a controversy to watch out for if he is not a unanimous pick.
