Diving Into the New Year

With 2019 rolling out and 2020 coming in, many people have been reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the new one.  Some people want to make changes to themselves and work hard to achieve new goals, while others are simply excited for what’s to come.  Regardless, the new year, and in this case, the new decade, are a time of change.

Alicia Iturralde ‘20, says, “We have so many exciting things, such as prom and graduation.  I’m also excited for the summer because I am done with this place.”

The seniors have been here for a long time, and this year, their hard work is finally being rewarded.  With many events planned for seniors, such as Prom, Grad Night, Luncheon, and, of course, Graduation, it’s hard not to be excited.  For the past 3 (or 5) years, the current Whitney Young seniors have watched seniors of previous years move onto college and celebrate their time here at Whitney Young.  Now, in the year of 2020, it’s finally their turn.

While some are optimistic for their 2020, students in other grades just hope to get by.  Jiajun Xie‘21, notes, “I honestly just hope I can get an A in English. That class is tough.”

In an attempt to get the best possible education, many students load their schedule with AP courses and are often left quite busy with the workload on top of their extracurricular activities.  Luckily, there are many academic resources that are available during lunch periods, and students who have not used these in the past may make it a goal to use these in the new year.

Others are much more general with their goals. Fontane Rosa ‘20  insists, “I just want to improve myself in all fields.”

While this isn’t very specific, it isn’t bad at all. Striving for success in whatever you do, whether its a sport or a class or something else, is an excellent goal. It seems like something that everyone should want to do, but often times, it turns out much more difficult than it sounds. It’s easy to slack off and procrastinate, so in the new year, many are hoping to leave these bad habits in the past.

Although people have different goals and aspirations, the new year is a time of change for everyone.  It’s a time to reset and reflect on how you would like your year to turn out. Even if you have had some bad habits in the past, the new year is a perfect time to work on these. Happy New Year!
