Though by living in Chicago, cold weather is to be expected as winter is approaching, but it was never expected to be this frigid this fast. Within the last three weeks, 20 of those days consisted of below average temperatures, leading for Chicago to have the coldest November on record this year. On Monday, November 10th, Chicago was hit with six inches of snow, and consequently, sheets of ice lining the streets and sidewalks after the snow melted early Tuesday morning. The snow left thousands of flights coming in and out of O’hare canceled, but resumed mid day Tuesday. Although the city has been adamant about lining the streets with salt, unfortunately, the chemical compound of the salt cannot do an effective job while the temperatures are still frigidly cold. This bitter cold, snow, and ice is something to be expected in January, not now in the beginning of November. Luckily within the coming days will be slightly warmer temperatures, averaging at about a high of 38 degrees, and a low of 30 degrees for the next upcoming week. I asked Whitney Young students what they thought about the cold weather, and it’s limiting them in any way. Joshua Mhoon ‘21 said, “I think the weather dropped very suddenly and hit very hard. I believe that this is why so many Chicagoans have been getting sick recently. It’s been hard for me to have the motivation to leave the house for activities other than school.” Another student, Leslie Garcia ‘21 said something similar, “ I don’t like how much the cold weather limits me from going outside, it also just puts me and others I know in a sadder mood.”  While on the other hand, Julia Macellaio ‘20 said, “I like the cold weather because it makes being inside so much more enjoyable and cozier.” Luckily within the coming days will be slightly warmer temperatures, averaging at about a high of 38 degrees for the next week.
