On October 10, 2019 at  9:18 am, the seniors of Whitney Young HS stumbled through the school’s halls wearing all black clothes to show their senior spirit. If you were in the building, you were probably startled by the stampede of the seniors, chanting “2-0, 2020” at the top of their lungs. This school’s annual tradition is set in place to fire up the seniors, and during this time period at school, many seniors create new friends and form tighter bonds. This year was different – within the last three years at Whitney Young, the Senior Blackout has been held in the back of the Arts Building, but this year, the seniors decided to take advantage of the new field; they also came up with the money to rent a bouncy house. With music from portable speakers blasting, and everyone in their different, self-made blackout gear, students had an amazing time. Caleb Young ‘20, thought that “it was a good time, and that it should have been longer. But it was such a fun experience.” Kayla Triplett ‘21, mentioned that “Blackout made [her] excited to be a senior for the next year and that the upcoming seniors should try to get something as cool as the bouncy house.” Rogelio Renteria ‘20, said that “it was such a good opportunity to meet people I never knew existed in my grade. For once I felt like we were all together in one place, all enjoying each other’s presence.”

It will be interesting to see how the class of ‘20 manages to run the school for these next few months.
